'Load Control and Demand Side Management in Smart Grid'

Abstract: Smart grid aims to integrate distributed energy resources and provide electricity in an efficient, reliable, clean, and sustainable manner. It supports real-time bidirectional communications between utility companies and smart meters. By the use of advanced metering infrastructure, utility companies can retrieve real-time energy consumption information from their customers. The customers can obtain pricing information from the utility companies. This facilitates the use of demand side management, which allows the customers to shift the loads from on-peak to off-peak periods. The smart grid also supports the integration of microgrids, which have their own distributed generators and energy storage. In this presentation, I will describe some of the technical challenges that will arise in future smart grid and summarize some of our research to address them.
